Construction methodology should bring together the practical constraints that determine how work will proceed. Access, temporary works, plant strategy, workface progression, trade interfaces and handover logic cannot sit outside the programme as separate assumptions.
A crane strategy, hoist location or scaffold design can determine when key areas become available. A temporary works solution can control the start of permanent works. A planned handover between structure, envelope, MEP and fit-out may depend on conditions not yet fully understood.
This is where high-level methodology can be misleading. A route through the project may look workable in a planning meeting, but still create risk when tested against site boundaries, vertical movement, storage space, neighbouring operations, approvals and package dependencies.
Visual planning and 4D sequencing can expose these pressures earlier by showing whether the proposed methodology works as the site changes.
Weak assumptions create downstream programme pressure
When methodology assumptions are under-tested, the effect is often felt later as fragmented progress. Teams may be working, but not efficiently. Workfaces open late, areas are revisited, trades overlap in constrained spaces, materials arrive before they can be used, or handovers take longer than expected.
These issues are often described as site coordination problems. In reality, many originate earlier, when the delivery logic was not sufficiently challenged.
For example, a programme may assume that fit-out can follow closely behind envelope works. The methodology needs to test whether the envelope will be complete enough, whether access will remain available, whether temporary protection is required, and whether MEP installation can progress without blocking other trades.
Without that testing, the programme may retain its dates but lose its buildability.
Effective methodology thinking focuses on buildable delivery logic
Strong early methodology review is not about adding complexity. It is about making sure the programme is supported by a construction approach that can be delivered in the conditions available.
The most useful reviews focus on the decisions that control progress: how workfaces are created and released, which activities depend on temporary works, where plant and access strategies influence the critical path, how trades interface, and what condition each area must reach before handover.
This helps project teams distinguish between a programme that is well presented and one that is genuinely deliverable. A credible programme should show not only what happens and when, but how each stage can be achieved safely, efficiently and in the right order.
Late recovery can sometimes regain time, but it rarely removes the weakness of an under-tested methodology. Once the site is congested and decisions are reactive, the options for change are narrower and more expensive.
